Hyundai Merchant Marine (HMM), Korea’s biggest shipping firm in terms of container capacity, has launched an 11,000 TEU container ship equipped with the cutting-edge SOx scrubber system to significantly reduce sulfur emission.

The company held a launching ceremony for the colossal vessel christened HMM PROMISE in Busan on Thursday.

The scrubber system was retrofitted to the ship after it was delivered to HMM last August from Subic-based Korean shipbuilder Hanjin Heavy Industries & Construction in the Philippines.

The move was made to comply with global environment protection standards that will go into effect in 2020.

The HMM PROMISE is the world’s first commercially operating mega container vessel of more than 11,000 TEUs equipped with a large scrubber system and its engine that ensures optimal economic speed and performance is expected to save fuel,” said an HMM official.

The HMM PROMISE also represents the first large container ship delivered to HMM after its ownership was shifted into the hands of state-run Korea Development Bank in August 2016.

HMM’s container ship capacity is now about 410,000 TEUs, one tenth of the world`s largest container shipper Maersk Line.

The HMM PROMISE will cover shipping to the eastern coast of South America, while the HMM BLESSING, a twin vessel delivered from the same dockyard, will be launched next week to cover shipping to the western coast of South America, HMM said.
