Imperial Oil reported a release of light hydrocarbon material late Thursday morning from its Sarnia refinery.
The company said in a press release the material was released from a safety valve on an operating unit at approximately 11:15 a.m., and lasted for about one minute.
Imperial said there were no injuries, and that it was communicating with its nearest neighbours to determine if there were impacts beyond its property.
The company said it notified city officials, and other authorities, about the incident.
“Safety of people and protecting the environmental are core values at Imperial and when an incident at our site occurs, we carry out a detailed review,” refinery manager Brian Fairley said in the press release.
He called the incident “unfortunate” and said the company will work to understand the cause of the release.
