Petronas to bid for jobs in Iran

PetronasPetroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) is among 29 major energy companies from Europe and Asia shorlisted to bid for oil and gas (O&G) projects in Iran.

According to National Iranian Oil’s website, most of the companies on the list were involved in Iran’s O&G industry projects before sanctions were imposed on the country in 2011. They had been lifted last year.

Besides Petronas, others on the list included Indonesia’s Pertamina, Thailand’s PTT Exploration and Production Public Co Ltd, China’s CNPC and Sinopec International, Mitsubishi Corp, Japan Petroleum Exploration, Korea Gas Corp and Posco Daewoo.

The European companies on the list included Royal Dutch Shell, Italy’s ENI, France’s Total, Russia’s Gazprom and Lukoil, and Schlumberger of the Netherlands.

Petronas had already signed preliminary agreements with Iran last year.

In December 2016, Petronas had entered into memorandum of understanding with National Iranian Oil Company to study two oil fields in Iran, joining international companies such as Total and Gazprom to boost O&G production in the state.

Petronas said the study of the two oil fields would take six months, and should be concluded in the second quarter of this year.

In the past month, Iran had signed up Shell, Gazprom and Total to study its oil and gas potential after sanctions on its economy were lifted.
